Eugene
Edward Lee (1912-1996)
EUGENE
EDWARD LEE, known as "Beanie" to those who knew him, passed away
Friday, December 13th, 1996 at the age of eighty-four in Brooksville,
Florida. A long-time Cambridge resident, Eugene was the only son
of local author Edward Edson Lee (1884-1944) who used the pen name
Leo Edwards to write forty-four books for children during the 1920's
and 1930's.
Eugene
worked mostly as an engineer at the Beloit Iron Works (now the Beloit
Corporation) and in the summers took off work to manage the Hi-Lee
Cottages, a small resort on Lake Ripley. He went to school in Cambridge.
He and is wife, Betty Lee (Gates), were in the same class together
and had been married fifty-nine years. Eugene was reluctant to move
to Florida and would have stayed at Lake Ripley had it not been
for health reasons and a need for a warmer climate. There wasn't
a day that passed that he didn't recall fond memories of Cambridge,
Lake Ripley, or Hi-Lee Cottages. Betty will remain at their home
in Brooksville.
Together,
Eugene and Betty raised identical twin boys, Thomas (an Internet
Provider and Entrepreneur who lives in Upper Michigan) and Eugene,
Jr., (a set designer living in Rhode Island) and have three grandsons
(Graham, William, and Teddy) and two great-grand daughters (Megan
and Tessa).
Beanie
will be remembered.
